E. 254/11.

THE CROWN AGENTS TO

MESSRS. COODE, FITZMAURICE, WILSON AND MITCHELL

23rd March, 1927.

Gentlemen,

I enclose a copy of a telegram dated 5th

March addressed by the Governor of Hong Kong to the

Secretary of State for the Colonies regarding certain

proposals for dredging the bed of the harbour in that

Colony.

2. From the information in your possession or

available for reference (e.g. Admiralty charts) we shall

be glad if you will advise on the following points: -

(a) Thether the deepening of the harbour bed which it is proposed to effect, is likely to remain, without excessive maintenance dredging.

(b) Whether the channel which it is proposed to dredge in a south westerly direction from a point 700 yards south of the south-west of Stone cutters Island is likely to achieve its obiect of increasing the scouring action of the ebb tide.

(c) Whether there is any danger that the dredging

operations proposed may influence the tidal currents in the Harbour to the detriment of any of the facilities provided by the Harbour.

(d) Whether the sum proposed to be expended on

the dredging could be more advantageously expended on the harbour in some other direction

3.

You will note from the accompanying telegram

that if the proposed work is to be entrusted to the

Netherlands Harbour Works Company it is necessary for a

contract
